“Nearly half of all immigrants detained by federal officials are held in facilities run by private prison companies, at an average cost for each detained immigrant is $166 a night. That’s added up to massive profits for Corrections Corporation of America, The GEO Group and other private prison companies:

A decade ago, more than 3,300 criminal immigrants were sent to private prisons under two 10-year contracts the Federal Bureau of Prisons signed with CCA worth $760 million. Now, the agency is paying the private companies $5.1 billion to hold more than 23,000 criminal immigrants through 13 contracts of varying lengths.”

Why the difference between then and now? Perhaps because it’s more profitable to round up undocumented immigrants nowadays. And maybe the shareholders of Corrections Corporation of America, The GEO Group and other private prison companies are big investors in the presidential campaigns of President Barack Obama. He represents one faction of Wall Street. Mitt the Twit represents the other half. So perhaps Obama has ordered the biggest roundups of illegal immigrants in US history to appease his base, which is among the 1 percent.

Republicans Blocking Job Creation

Responding to the latest employment report, that 163,000 jobs were created in June 2012, the White House noted correctly that major areas of job weakness — including positions in construction and teaching — are precisely those that would have been the subject of the jobs bill proposed in 2011 by President Obama. That legislation was blocked by Congressional Republicans.

Mitt Romney responded to the July report by saying that the numbers reflect the failure of Mr. Obama’s policies when, in reality, they reflect the success of the Republican obstructionism.

That leaves the Federal Reserve to try to boost the economy. But what’s needed is direct intervention in the form of more federal spending on education, infrastructure, clean energy, basic research and job training. Until then, we’re stuck.

UC Berkley physicist Richard Muller penned an op-ed for the New York Times on the new findings of his Berkley Earth Surface Temperatures (BEST) study. The op-ed is titled “The Conversion of a Climate-Change Skeptic”.

Ironically enough, Muller’s study, which turned him into a believer, was funded, in no small part, by the climate change denying, oil and chemical magnate Koch Brothers.

Not only did Muller change his mind on whether or not climate change was real, he also came to the conclusion that human production of greenhouse gases were almost entirely to blame for it.
