Caius Rommen was the scientist who invented the GMO potato. GMO stands for genetically modified organism. The GMO potato has been modified to include insecticides and herbicides in them. This way when a bug bites into the potato plant, or worse yet, an underground bug bites into a budding potato, the insecticide inside the potato forces the bug’s stomach to grow until it explodes.

Likewise, a herbicide has been genetically implanted into GMO potatoes. This kills weeds to within three feet of each potato plant.

Quite naturally, you eat the herbicide and the insecticide when you eat the GMO potato. Somehow, at the time of its development, Caius Rommen thought the GMO potato was good for human consumption and health.

Rommens was director of research at Simplot Plant Sciences from 2000 to 2013 where he led development of the company’s genetically engineered Innate potato. But over time, Rommens started to have serious doubts about his work and worried about potential health risks from eating the GMO potatoes, which are now sold in 4,000 supermarkets in the United States.

Rommens wrote the book, Pandora’s Potatoes, which is about how his enthusiasm for genetic engineering turned into doubt and fear as he realized the hazards the technology can create.

In a recent interview with EcoWatch, Rommens told his story.

“I left my position as team leader at Monsanto,” he said, “to start an independent biotech effort at Simplot. During the 12 years I worked there, I designed a genetically modified potato that I believed was resistant to bruise and late blight, and that could be used to produce French fries that were less colored and less carcinogenic than normal fries.”

In his book, Rommens writes that he silenced genes called RNAi. In his interview, Rommens said, “Silencing is not gene-specific. Any gene with a similar structure to the silencing construct may be silenced as well. It is even possible that the silencing that takes place inside the GM potatoes affects the genes of animals eating these GM potatoes. I am most concerned about bees that don’t eat GM potatoes but may use GM potato pollen to feed their larvae. Based on my assessment of the literature, it appears that the silencing constructs are active in pollen.”

Rommens also wrote that silencing the PPO (polyphenol oxidase, a gene responsible for browning in potatoes) gene increases toxins that accumulate in the GMO potatoes. He admits these toxins are harmful to human health.

Rommens said, “Ex-colleagues of mine had shown that PPO-silencing increases the levels of alpha-aminoadipate by about six-fold. Alpha-aminoadipate is a neurotoxin, and it can also react with sugars to produce advanced glycoxidation products implicated in a variety of diseases.

(A Monsanto GM corn variety, LY038, was found to have high concentrations of alpha-aminoadipate, and an application for its approval in Europe in 2009 was withdrawn after regulators raised safety questions.)

He went on. “Similarly, ex-colleagues had shown that the damaged and bruised tissues of potatoes may accumulate high levels of tyramine, another toxin. Such damaged tissues are normally identified and trimmed, but they are concealed, or partially concealed, and much of it is not trimmed in GM potatoes. Therefore, it seems important that Simplot should determine the full spectrum of possible tyramine levels in their GM potatoes.

Another potential toxin is chaconine-malonyl. There is little known about this compound, but ex-colleagues had shown that it is increased by almost 200 percent upon PPO-silencing. This should probably be investigated.”

Rommens also says the potatoes create additional pathogens, infections and the range in levels of toxins such as alpha-aminoadipate and tyramine.

“It is my experience,” Rommens said, “that genetic engineers are biased and narrow-minded. They may not be able to critically assess their own creations.” Of course, when you are making a ton of money producing toxic garbage for human consumption, it is difficult to think of your product as toxic garbage.

When asked, “What is your perspective on genetic engineering now after your work with the GMO potato and misgivings about it?”

“My concern,” Rommens said, “about genetic engineering is that the absence of unintentional effects can never be guaranteed. It may take dozens of years before these effects reveal themselves, and we should be extremely cautious applying the technology.”

Because GMO food products are loaded with insecticides and herbicides, they reduce the labor necessary to grow the food, making them less expensive to produce, and providing the corporate producers with higher profit margins. And that is why they are on the market.

Bayer owns Monsanto, and along with Syngenta, BSAF, Dupont, and Dow Chemical, these corporations are the big six of the GMO poisons. They are so called because they dominate the agricultural input market, that is, they own the world’s seed, pesticide and biotechnology industries.

The GMO corporations are following the same practice of deceit as the tobacco industry did for decades when it came to the relationship of cancer and tobacco products, as well as the oil industry in its denial of the relationship of oil products and global warming. Exxon spent hundreds of millions of dollars denying this relationship, and now it has come clean, and told us the truth its management has known for over forty years.

According to extensive Food and Drug Administration (FDA) memos made public through a lawsuit, and which can be found on the web, the overwhelming consensus of the agency’s own scientists was that genetically engineered foods pose abnormal and unique risks including new toxins, allergens and nutritional problems. The scientists called for rigorous safety tests to protect our health. Tragically, a political appointee at the FDA covered up the warnings and allowed genetically modified organisms (GMOs) on the market without requiring any testing. That official in charge of GMO policy was formerly an attorney representing the GMO giant, Monsanto. He later became Monsanto’s Vice President and is now back at the FDA as the “US Food Czar.”

Monsanto claimed its GMO products had no unhealthy impacts of rats, yet the studies we were told about only tested the rats for two months. A few years ago, a French scientist discovered that horrible tumors began to develop on rats fed a diet of GMO beginning at three months. One has to wonder if Monsanto’s experiment’s on rats went up to three months or more, but having discovered GMOs caused tumors at three months, the company only reported its findings on rats for up to two months. Cover-ups and lies are not new to this and other industries.

Syngenta is the second largest GMO producer in the world. After claiming its GMO poison’s did no harm, one of Syngenta’s own studies leaked to the public showed that its GMO milk cow feed killed cows, and it was still selling the poison throughout the world. See https://johnhively.wordpress.com/2013/06/23/gmo-corn-killing-the-cows-whose-milk-we-drink/

Over 90% of US GMOs are engineered to withstand being sprayed with Monsanto’s glyphosate-based herbicide, Roundup. Glyphosate and glyphosate herbicides are classified by the World Health Organization as “probable” human carcinogens. Glyphosate is a powerful synthetic antibiotic and blocks mineral absorption. Glyphosate herbicides are endocrine disruptors and mitochondrial toxins, and have been linked to birth defects. In other words, when your eating GMO tainted food, you are eating poison.

Monsanto and others have been caught designing their research on GMOs and Roundup to hide problems, and they distort or deny adverse findings when they do arise. In truth, numerous animal feeding studies show evidence of harm, including cancer, organ damage, accelerated signs of aging, immune system problems, hormone imbalance, tumors, reproductive and developmental problems, premature death, and more.

“The results of most studies with GM foods indicate that they may cause some common toxic effects such as hepatic, pancreatic, renal, or reproductive effects…”
– Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition (A. Dona and I.S. Arvanitoyannis)

Although the industry claims that no humans have been hurt by consuming GMOs, there has been no scientific monitoring of human health reactions. Furthermore, thousands of healthcare practitioners advise their patients to stop eating GMOs, and many report that doing so has resulted in significant improvements in digestive disorders, obesity, diabetes, allergies, kidney disease, infertility, fatigue, chronic pain, inflammation, and autism.

“Over half of American children now have a chronic health disorder and this number is likely to rise. Intestinal dysfunction is evident in nearly all patients seen in my clinic. A significant number of them get better simply by switching to an organic diet. It’s that simple.”

Hawaiian protestors are hounding the pesticide/GMO manufacturer Syngenta, all the way to the company’s headquarters in Switzerland, where many of its products are banned due to health concerns, but which are perfectly legal in the United States.

Malia Chun was one of the protestors. “Traveling with a small delegation from her island, Chun came halfway around the world to confront Syngenta as both a mother and a practicing teacher of Native Hawaiian culture. Chun and others in her community suspect the pesticides may be responsible for an uptick in health problems such as asthma and birth defects, including several cases where babies were born with their intestines outside of their bodies. “As far as pesticide exposure goes, it’s most harmful to children, both born and unborn,” Chun said. “‘It’s also a direct desecration of our culture.'”

Although there is a movement in the US House of Representatives to eliminate your voting rights with respect to genetically modified organisms that are placed in your food and your land, and although the state government of Oregon has passed legislation to ban the voting rights of Oregon citizens on this issue in violation of the state constitution, a BENTON COUNTY, OREGON group, Benton Food Freedom, moved forward last December with a citizen-led initiative called the Local Food System Ordinance to prohibit GMO crop cultivation in the county. Supporters gathered 3,078 signatures. Benton County Supervisor of Elections Jeff Doty confirmed that the measure will appear on the May 2015 ballot. He said the group had enough signatures to “easily qualify,” and the measure is now awaiting a number.

The legislation still in the US House, and the legislation passed by the Oregon state government, are attempts by whining politicians of the Democratic and Republican Party, such as US representative Mike Pompeo, to rig the economic and political game for the 0.01 percent against citizens of ordinary means. These corrupt plutocrats, on behalf of the 0.01 percent, know precisely what they are doing, they’re trying to stop you from exercising your constitutional right to vote.

As for the Benton County initiative, “The basic scenario is that communities are caught in a situation now where they are being kept out of big decisions,” said Kai Huschke, community organizer for Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund. The legal argument for Benton’s ban will be something like this: “Local governments have a constitutional right to create laws with tighter restrictions than what’s mandated at the state or federal levels. “This is a proposition for the people of Benton County, not the state or corporations.”

“Essential Points of the Local Food Ordinance:
1. Legalizes Local Food System for present and future food security.
2. Protects locally grown Heritage seed from contamination by GMO and other patented technologies.
3. Gives Rights to Natural Communities necessary for Local Food System health and well being.
4. Gives Rights to Benton County residents over those claimed by Corporations, patent holders and the State regarding a GMO free Local Food system.”

WE HAVE THE RIGHT to tell the Monsanto’s of the world to take a hike. It’s as simple as that.

Wall Street’s US House Republican Mike Pompeo (who represents Monsanto in the US congress) last April called for a nationwide ban to label foods with genetically modified organisms in them, and the bill he sponsored is going to be aired in committee on December 10.  The bill is co-sponsored by Wall Street’s US House Representative G.K. Butterfield (a Democrat who represents Monsanto disguised as a representative of North Carolina). On November 21 of this year the editors of the Oregonian newspaper endorsed the ban, effectively calling for suppressing the votes of people nationwide.

In Oregon, Ballot Measure 92 called for the labeling of foods that contained GMOs. The people voted on it November 4. It’s now in the process of being recounted since the vote was so close. There are hints that the yes votes in some counties were under-counted, as reported by local news media, which is not the same as the corporate news media, which is what the Oregonian newspaper is.

Ballot Measure 92 had strong support among local businesses, such as the Whole Foods and New Seasons Food Store chains. Those opposed to the measure were out-of-state companies such as Pepsico and Monsanto. The editors of the Oregonian newspaper were against Measure 92, which shows how important the national corporate agenda to wipe out democracy for the middle class is to the editors when they can defy local advertisers on behalf of out-of-state multinational corporations.

Ballot Measure 92 was a product of signatures, and a process called an initiative. Under this system, citizens can write a possible law, get enough voter signatures, and the proposal gets on the ballot. Then citizens vote yes or no on the thing. Notice bio-tech corporations and food corporations that poison people by putting GMOs in their food products can’t vote on these initiatives. Which brings us to an important point.

There is no such thing as an initiative process on the national level. In other words, Pompeo, Butterfield, and the editors of the Oregonian newspaper, are proposing to wipe out the initiative process on the state and local levels when it comes to GMOs. In other words, they are planning to steal your right to vote by going through congress. Nice scam, huh?

Most of the Republican Party, a large chunk of the Democratic Party, and most of the corporate propaganda machine disguised as news outlets are moving to destroy your voting rights to make the nation safe for the poisons known as GMOs.

The editors of the Oregonian newspaper insist there are no serious studies that show GMO’s are harmful to human health. Any such studies are under dispute, or so they’ve written in the past. Here’s what they haven’t mentioned; those studies are under dispute only by the GMO corporations and organizations funded by GMO corporations. The plot thickens, doesn’t it?

While there are numerous independent studies showing likely harmful effects by GMOs to humans, there are also two studies we know of that demonstrate possible human health problems with GMOs underwritten by GMO giant Syngenta. Both were kept secret by Syngenta. The editors of the Oregonian have kept us ignorant of these studies. Check out the reports on them below.

The honesty of GMO corporate leadership on this issue, and the honesty of the editors and reporters of the Oregonian newspaper, are similar to the honesty of the leaders of the tobacco corporations when they told us for decades that the use of tobacco had no harmful impacts on humans, and they suppressed their own studies on this issue showing the opposite was true. In other words, they lied. And we’re supposed to trust the GMO corporations?

The editors of the Oregonian, Pompeo and Butterfield know this too, yet they support the same tactics for GMO corporations as the tobacco industry once used. That’s how they keep us ignorant, and allow the 1 percent to roll over us. That is their job.

In Oregon, ballot measure 92 asks voters to vote yes or no on labeling food products with GMOs in them. There are plenty of studies that show the harmful impacts on animals, but no long term studies have been done on humans.

Syngenta is the 2nd largest manufacture of GMOs in the world, and its own leaked studies show that the GMO grains it produces for milk cows kills milk cows, and yet, it still sells that poison to dairy farmers. There is an ongoing lawsuit in Germany over this issue. Another of Sygenta’s leaked studies demonstrates a tight link between the demise of amphibians (such as frogs in the USA) and one of its GMO herbicides. That story was published in an academic journal in 2001. Since then, numerous other unbiased academic studies have been published showing the same result. There are a plethora of studies showing that rats fed a diet of GMOs have gotten tumors, cancer, deformed genitalia, and more.

Given the mass of evidence, it appears that the primary purpose of the Oregonian newspaper, as well as the local Willamette Week, is to keep people ignorant of these important issues. The editorial boards of both newspapers have recommended a “no” vote on Measure 92 because there are no long term studies showing potential harmful impacts of GMOs to humans. I’ve never known anybody to have volunteered for such an experiments. Neither newspaper have ever mentioned in the ink on their pages, so far as I can find, the academic studies showing the harm GMO poisons do to animals.

Most people don’t know much, if anything, about genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and that 70 percent of our food are made with them. This suggests the purpose of the Oregonian newspaper and the Willamette Week, as well as most media outlets, is to keep people ignorant. Would anybody eat food with this poison in them if they knew about the dire health risks posed by them? Probably not. Perhaps that’s why these propaganda tools refuse to mention the studies showing unhealthy results of eating GMOs, and why they ask people to vote no on Measure 92.

The actions of the editors of both newspapers also show us that they are merely a tool of the one percent that are used to mislead and lie to the 99 percent so as to more easily shape public opinion to support the financial raping and pillaging of the 99 percent by and for the 1 percent.

Vote for your health! Vote for the health of your children! Vote for the 99 percent! Vote against the 1 percent in their war against the middle class. Do something the editors of the Oregonian newspaper don’t want you to do. Vote yes on Measure 92!
